HONG KONG SAR, China, 17 May 2019 – Chubb Fire & Security, a leading provider of security and fire-safety solutions for businesses and industry worldwide, recently received the “Outstanding Volunteer Award - Corporate Care” presented by the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council (the Welfare Council). The award is in recognition of its Green Shoots program, a youth-focused community outreach program. Chubb is part of Carrier, a leading global provider of innovative heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, fire, security and building automation technologies. Carrier serves customers in the commercial aerospace, defence and building industries worldwide.
Together with Carrier, Chubb was nominated by Holy Carpenter Church Hong Kong (HCCHK), a part of the Welfare Council, for co-organizing Green Shoots events for two consecutive years. HCCHK is a non-profit organization that aims at helping the low-income families by providing educational, medical, and social service supports in Hong Kong.
The Green Shoots program aims to enhance student educational environments by improving school infrastructure, while encouraging young minds to think about safety, science and sustainability at an early age. Since 2011, thousands of Carrier employees have volunteered for the program, covering primary schools in China, India, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia, Japan, Korea and Singapore, benefiting over 50,000 children.
In 2018, Green Shoots brought together more than 30 children at an event with the theme “Super Junior Engineer,” where engineers shared their knowledge of fire safety, security and HVAC and provided guidance to the children to help them design and build their own fire detection, intrusion alarm system and air-conditioner models with recycled materials.
"We are proud to receive this award for a program that is creating a positive impact across the communities where we operate and helping to nurture a passion for safety and sustainability in the next generation,” said Samantha Tam, Human Resources Director, Chubb Hong Kong, Macau & Mainland China. “Green Shoots is a perfect example of how the company walks the talk on corporate responsibility, by encouraging our employees to bring their expertise, creativity and enthusiasm to share our learnings on safety, technology and sustainability for our future thinkers, leaders and citizens.”
Kelvin Wan, Service Manager of HCCHK, gave high praise for the program, saying, “The smiles and laughter we’ve seen from students prove how well the Green Shoots program is received. We are deeply impressed by the commitment of United Technologies and all the volunteering employees, and look forward to continuously passing on care and hope to children from underprivileged communities together with United Technologies.”
Established in 1966, the Welfare Council has been providing multifaceted services to individuals across all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds. The “Outstanding Volunteer Award” is organized by them to recognize volunteers, corporate volunteers and group volunteers’ enthusiasm and efforts in social services.
